I am writing to express my disappointment that you have voted to confirm Todd Blanche as the United States Attorney General.
The Attorney General leads the Department of Justice, an institution that must function as an independent force for upholding the rule of law and equal justice. Todd Blanche’s previous role as personal defense counsel to Donald Trump creates an undeniable conflict of interest.
As Assistant Attorney General and Acting Attorney General, Mr. Blanche's tenure has raised profound concerns about his independence and fitness to lead.
Actions such as his involvement in controversial settlement deals and his proposal for an "Anti-Weaponization Fund" and immunity to Trump and his family for tax violations are a perfect example of how the Justice Department is used to reward political allies and advance personal agendas rather than to serve the American people.
Our nation requires a Department of Justice that places the Constitution and the rule of law above political or personal loyalty. Instead, the independence of our top law enforcement agency is clearly, profoundly, and without shame, undermining public trust.
The job of the Senate Judiciary Committee is to root out the weakness of candidates coming before it. That did not happen here, just as it didn’t for Emil Bove, another Trump Attorney that you swept through the confirmation process.
As midterms edge closer, the same people you regarded as fit to honor the Constitution above partisanship will instead be in lockstep with a President determined to undermine free and fair elections.
